KUCUK MECIDIYE MOSQUE

There are a lot of beautiful historic mosques around Istanbul and Küçük Mecidiye Camii is one of the mosques that is built during Ottoman Period. If you have planned on visiting Dolmabahce Palace or staying at Ciragan Palace Hotel, or even if you are heading through Ortaköy, you can stop by to visit this mosque or pray salah here for a while. Kücük Mecidiye Mosque or also called Teshrifiye Mosque (as its second name), placed at the Yahya Efendi Street, right side of entrance way of Yıldız Park. The building made by Sultan Abdülmecit, by architect Garabet Amira Balyan and Nigogos Balyan who are famous palace architects of the period, on 1848. The sultan had it made the mosque at the center of Yıldız, Dolmabahce and Ciragan Palaces. It is also said, the mosque is built to purpose of being part of Ciragan Palace during that time. As there is Mecidiye Mosque at Ortaköy (also called Ortakoy Mosque), they name it ‘Kücük Mecidiye Mosque’ (Little Mecidiye Mosque) in order not to be confused them. Kücük Mecidiye Mosque is also called as ‘Misafir Camii’ (The guest mosque) because in past it didn’t have any particular cemaah.

 

The mosque is built on 400 sqm of 1600 sqm land. It is counted as holy as it has a ground from Kaaba, Makkah mixed while constructing it. During last century, the mosque is called ‘Teşrifiye Camii’. There was madrasah (school), caravansary, Ottoman elementary- primary school surrounding area of the mosque. The military soldiers who are traveling through Anatolia were hosted in that caravansary.

One of the unique characteristics of the mosque is, it is designed baroque style and only one minaret which isn’t seen on historic Ottoman made of mosques.

 

 

HOW TO PLAN ON VISITING?

If you are thinking off spending a day around Dolmabahce Palace or Ortakoy, you may plan your day like this; Starting from Dolmabahce Palace, you can walk through the Ciragan Palace. The Ciragan Palace is hotel at the moment, you can still enjoy a lunch or a coffee across Bosphorous there. When the edhan time, you can across the road and get into Kücük Mecidiye Mosque to pray. After the prayer, you can enter to the Yıldız Park (entrance is free), spend a great time there as its the one of the rare natural parks in the middle of the city, visiting Yıldız Palace and Malta Köşk could be another option for you before to head towards Ortaköy, if you think of filling your whole day.
